Stephanie Metz
Purpose + Design was founded by Stephanie Metz. She is the sole proprietor of the business, and carries out the design and production of all new projects within the firm. She collaborates with other architects, landscape architects, engineers, designers, and drafts-people as needed for each project.
Stephanie is passionate about living gently. This informs the way she interacts with other people, as well as the earth. For her work in architecture, this means practicing responsible design: using sustainable building practices, and spreading the positive impact of good design.
Stephanie studied Biology and Education at Clemson University before listening more closely to her heart and pursuing a degree in architecture. In 2001, she graduated with a B.A in Architectural Design. After a stint working for a Seattle structural engineer, Stephanie returned to school at the University of Michigan, where she earned a Master's Degree in Architecture. While there, she and her partner were given the top award for the Contested Urbanism Design Competition for their project "Activation", which re-purposed abandoned buildings in downtown Detroit. She also worked on MiSo, the University of Michigan's entry into the Solar Decathlon competition, put on by the Department of Energy. Following graduate school, Stephanie spent more than eight years with Ike Kligerman Barkley Architects in New York.
